Holy Cross

Welcome to the Dominican Friary of the Holy Cross.

We are a community of Dominican Friars and part of the Irish Province of the Order of Preachers (The Dominican Order). Our life revolves around prayer and bringing others into a relationship with Jesus Christ. In light of this, our journey of faith with the people of Sligo has remained almost unchanged since the day we arrived here almost 800 years ago, in 1252.

Our ministry is predominantly Church based, the centre of which being the celebration of the Sacraments of the Holy Eucharist and Reconciliation (Confession).

Our Holy Father Saint Dominic founded the Order of Preachers (the Dominicans) for “Preaching Jesus Christ and for the salvation of souls”. With this as our foundation, we live and pray in common, celebrate the Sacraments and to our very best to preach the Good News of Jesus Christ.

In a world Dominated by what Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI called a “Dictatorship of Relativism,” we as Dominicans firmly believe that VERITAS (Truth) does exist and can only be found in our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. We therefore invite you to join us in deepening our friendship with Jesus Christ who is the Way, the Truth and the Life.

“Laudare, Benedicere, Praedicare” – “To Praise, To Bless, To Preach”.

“The truth will set you free – free to live, free to be a child of God”.
